Band Locking the Katalyst Spark Modem

Please follow the guide lines below to band or channel lock a Katalyst Spark modem.

  1. Enter the Network Settings (GUI) of the modem by going to the modems IP address 192.168.8.1
  1. Ensure you are connected to the modem either via Wi-Fi or Ethernet cable
  2. The default password is on the back of the modem on the sticker  (last 6 digits of the SSN)

  1. Once logged into the modem click on the Manual Setup next to the red Disconnect button.

3. In the next screen scroll to the bottom and click on Advanced

  1. Turn on/enable Band Masking

  1. Now you can choose between blocking or opening channels.
  1. Blocking
  1. In "Block" mode the modem will block the bands selected (Not Recommended).

  1. Open
  1. In "Open" mode, the router will use the bands selected and all the others will be blocked (Recommend this versus "Block")

  1. Select the LTE Bands and select the bands that are in your area, i.e 2, 4, 5, 13, 66, etc.
  1. This will only try to connect to those bands and block out all the other bands.
  1. Select the 5G NSA Bands and click on Select All
  1. This will allow the router to connect to any 5G NSA bands in the area but limit the LTE Bands
  1. Select 5G SA Bands and click on select all
  1. This will allow the router to connect to any 5G SA bands in the area but limit the LTE Bands

  1. Click on Apply.

  1. Monitor your Signal Strength and Signal Quality by going into the Historical Signal Record

  1. The three option should be showing signal from Fair to Excellent.  If these are in the POOR range try adjusting the bands.
  1. RSRP (Reference Signal Receive Power)
  2. RSRQ (Reference Signal Received Quality)
  3. SINR (Signal to Interference & Noise Ratio)

As you can see from the example above the 5G signal is not the greatest.  But if you look below the 4G service is better.

These areas can be improved by block/opening bands on the router that are strongest in your local area.
You can check your local cell towers/bands available using cellmapper.net
