How to Change Your Wi-Fi Name & Password

Katalyst Spark — Setup Guide

Want to give your Wi-Fi network a custom name or a more memorable password? Follow these simple steps to update your Spark's Wi-Fi settings.

Before You Start

You will need to be logged in to your admin panel at 192.168.8.1 before making any changes. If you haven't done this before, see Guide 3 — How to Access Your Admin Panel for step-by-step login instructions.

💡  Tip: If you are using a smartphone to access the admin panel and your Spark does not currently have internet service, turn off your phone's Mobile Data first. Otherwise your phone may switch off the Spark's Wi-Fi automatically and you won't be able to reach 192.168.8.1.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1

Log in to your admin panel.

Connect to your Spark Wi-Fi and open a browser. Go to 192.168.8.1 and log in with Username: root and your password (last 8 digits of your Serial Number from the label on the bottom of the device).

2

Click "Wireless" in the menu.

In the left-side menu, click Wireless. You'll see your 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi bands listed.

3

Click "Modify" for the band you want to update.

Each band has a Modify button at the bottom of its section. Click it to edit that band's settings.

4

Change the Wi-Fi Name (SSID).

In the Wi-Fi Name (SSID) field, delete the current name and type your new preferred network name.

5

Change the Password.

In the Wi-Fi Password field, enter your new password. Use something at least 8 characters long that you'll remember.

6

Click "Apply" to save.

Click the green Apply button. Your device will apply the new settings — all devices on that network will be disconnected briefly and will need to reconnect with the new password.

7

Repeat for the other band.

Scroll down to find the 2.4 GHz band and click Modify to update its name and password too. We recommend giving them different names (e.g., MyHome and MyHome-5G) so you can tell them apart.

8

Reconnect your devices.

On your phone, tablet, or computer, go to Wi-Fi settings, select your new network name, and enter the new password.

The Wireless page — your 5 GHz band is shown at the top (KAT-XXXX-5G) and 2.4 GHz below (KAT-XXXX). Click Modify to edit either one.

Guest Wi-Fi

This device also has Guest Wi-Fi bands that you can modify from the same Wireless page. Guest Wi-Fi allows you to offer wireless internet access to visitors without sharing your main network password — keeping your personal devices separate and secure.

Guest Wi-Fi is also a great way to manage devices in your home that connect to the internet but don't need to be on your primary network. Devices like security cameras, smart appliances, thermostats, and other smart home devices can be connected to a Guest network instead. This keeps your main Wi-Fi networks free and less congested for the devices you use most frequently — such as phones, laptops, and TVs — which can help improve overall speed and performance on those devices.

Think of it as two separate lanes: your primary networks for everyday use, and the Guest network for devices that just need a background connection.

5 GHz vs. 2.4 GHz — What's the Difference?

💡  The 5 GHz band (KAT-XXXX-5G) is faster but has a shorter range — best for phones and laptops that are close to the router. The 2.4 GHz band (KAT-XXXX) reaches farther but at slower speeds — better for devices that are farther away or in another room. For best results, give them different names so you can choose which one to connect to.
